Water heaters
are typically the largest user of fuel after space heating.
The percentage of total fuel used for domestic water
heating has been going up over the last ten years because
homes tend to be better insulated than they used to.
The more you know about your water heating options the
better you can make the right decision about the type
of water heater you need.

Federal Tax Credit
On February 17, 2009 the American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act of 2009 established federal tax
credits of 30% of the total cost of purchasing and installing
a tankless water heater with a maximum credit of $1,500.
In order to qualify, the home owner must install a tankless
unit of .82 efficiency or higher. This substantially
lowers the payback period for installing a tankless
water heater. Further, the tax credit is a "credit"
rather than a "deduction" on federal taxes
which means that it reduces the homeowner's taxes dollar
for dollar.
